Reporting to Parents
All children will receive two written reports each year. Parents are welcome to contact their class teacher at any time during the school year should they have any concerns about their child. The best way to do this is to make an appointment to see the teacher either by e mail or through the school office.
Sharing the Learning
Families will be invited to ‘Sharing the Learning’ afternoons in terms 1 and 3. This part of our assessment and reporting cycle reflects the New Zealand Curriculum which states that children are a part of effective assessment by, “being clear about what they can do and what they still need to learn” and “involving them as they discuss and reflect on their goals, strategies and progress with their teachers, their parents and one another.”
The First 3 Years
In the first 3 years of schooling children are assessed against National Standards in reading, writing and mathematics on the anniversary of their start date at school and not at the end of each school year.
At the end of your child’s first, second and third year at school children and families will receive a postcard report. This is a summary only of their achievement against the relevant National Standard.
These children will then receive a written report mid year and at the end of the year showing progress towards the Standards they are working on. The end of year report is a full report and includes all curriculum areas. The timing of these reports will be in line with years 4, 5 and 6 so all children receive written reports at the same time of year.
Years 4, 5 and 6
When children reach Years 4, 5 and 6 the National Standards are end of school year standards and so children are assessed at the end of the school year no matter when they started school. These children will receive reports at the end of term 2 (interim report) and 4 (full report).
There are some children who reach the end of 3 years at school at the beginning of Year 4. These children are working towards the end of Year 4 National Standards and will receive mid and end of year reports against these Standards only.
Interim Reports
An interim report will report on progress towards the next Standard in reading, writing and maths and will indicate whether the teacher thinks your child is on track to meet these by the end of the year.
Full Reports
A full report includes whether your child has met the Standards in reading, writing and maths and also reports on the other areas of the curriculum. Both interim and full reports include effort.
Parent/Teacher discussions
All children will be offered a parent/teacher discussion at the end of term 2.
