Term 2 2019 – Monday 29th April 2019 to Friday 5th July 2019

School is closed on Wednesday 29th May (due to teacher strike action) Friday 31st May (Teacher Only Day) and Monday 3rd June (Queen’s Birthday public holiday)

Kia ora koutou.  Hello everyone.

Whole School Assembly

Team 6 will be leading our whole school assembly at 2pm tomorrow Friday 24th May. You are all welcome to come along.

Strike Action Wednesday 29th May

We greatly appreciate the community support that we have already received following the decision by teachers and principals to strike on Wednesday 29 May. The decision to take further strike action was not taken lightly by any of us. For the first time, both primary and secondary teachers are striking together because the crisis in education hits us all very hard and we need the Government to understand how serious it is.

Schools are grappling with the fallout of a 40% nosedive in the number of people training to be teachers between 2010 and 2016, even while the population grew by 400,000.  While the situation improved a little last year and the Government has announced an urgent $95m package to recruit teachers, this is not sufficient to address the crisis.  Schools struggle daily to find enough teachers to meet their relief teacher needs and this will worsen as winter approaches. There is also a desperate need for more support for children with additional learning needs.

Once again thank you for your support, particularly as the strike is in the same week as our teacher only day. This day needs to go ahead as the training being provided for our teachers by a professional facilitator around the new digital technologies aspect of the curriculum is important professional development in readiness for 2020.

Board of Trustees meeting 30th May

The Board will meet at 7pm in the administration building on Thursday 30th May. Anyone is welcome to come along.

New Zealand-A-Thon

This year’s a-thon is a New Zealand-a-thon and next Monday 27th May your child will bring home their fact sheet to learn and a sponsor sheet. The New Zealand-a-Thon was chosen to support the children’s learning about their country, it’s geography, history, bird plant and sea life. Fundraising from the a-thon supports items such as extra learning resources in the classrooms, furniture, ICT equipment and library. Please help your child to learn their facts and ask the teacher if you are unsure of anything.

The testing day will be Tuesday 11 June and children will have until Friday 21st June to gather their sponsorship funds following the testing day. We do not encourage children to go ‘door knocking’ and prefer that you monitor the soliciting of sponsors. Donations are welcomed should you not approve of gaining sponsorship.  We appreciate your assistance in this regard. Please complete the sponsor sheet and send this to school on the test day.

There is a ‘pizza for lunch’ prize for each team across the school to be won.  The winning class in each team will have the highest percentage of children return their sponsor sheet with money. Pizza will be on Tuesday 2nd July for the winning classes.

Thank you for supporting the New Zealand-A-Thon, raising money for the school and increasing your child/ren’s knowledge at the same time!

Bullying Free New Zealand Week

As you can see from the above photos we had a great response for Pink Shirt day last Friday and whilst the message was definitely a serious one, we also had a lot of fun dressing in pink, eating pink cupcakes, painting the playground (and ourselves!) pink and dancing to pink music! Thank you for your generosity; we have passed on a total donation of $503.60 to the Mental Health Foundation.

Travelwise Tip for this week

Keep our children safe … and park safe. Please play your part by:

  • Always observing the parking restrictions near the school
  • Always using the school patrol crossing
  • Choosing safety over convenience at all times
  • Walk with your child or join a Walking School Bus
FOTS news
A big thank you to our helpers, parents, and sponsors (Karin Blaauw and Countdown Browns Bay) for supporting the disco on Friday – I hope you all had as much fun as we did! We’ve made just over $3700, so well done all.
The next disco will be 1 November – a break from tradition, but we hope everyone can make it.
FOTS meeting
The next meeting is on Tuesday at 7pm in the staff room. All are welcome; feel free to email fots@glamorgan.school.nz for more info. New members are always welcome, don’t feel it’s too late since the school year is well underway.
Entertainment books
Thank you to those who have returned their forms or books or bought the online version already. Please ensure you return your books to the office if you are not interested in purchasing them. The link to purchase the digital version is https://www.entertainmentbook.co.nz/orderbooks/953n05.
For those that are new to the school/New Zealand, the Entertainment Book offers a load of discounts/freebies all around Auckland – days out, restaurants and cafes, travel, etc – and the school gets a share of the proceeds from each copy purchased. It’s well worth it!
Quiz night
The annual quiz and auction will be held on 24 August – registration will open soon, so watch this space! If you/your business are interested in sponsoring the event or donating a prize for the auction, please email Katie Elliott on fots@glamorgan.school.nz.

From this event we will select our school cross country team from the 8,9 and 10+ year groups to compete at the interschool cross country on Monday 24 June (save day 1 July) at Long Bay Regional Park.

The children will be sitting in age lines on their chairs in the middle of the field supervised by teachers. Children who need to leave the field are directed down a chute where they will be given a pass to leave the area. On their return they will need to give back the pass so that we can account for where the children are.

Children will not be able to leave school until 3:00pm as all classrooms will be locked. It is recommended to bring old clothes to school that are suitable to run in (a change of clothes is advisable) and also warm clothes to wait in. Lunch will be from 12.15p.m.-1.00p.m.

If the weather is not good and the cross country is postponed to 13 June, a message will be left on the information line, extension 2. Please note there will not be anyone available to take phone calls until the office opens at 8am. If both days are cancelled due to bad weather then we will run the races as and when we can fit them into the school day as we need to have a confirmed team for the inter schools cross country in two weeks time.
