Mr Bott

It is with great sadness that we will say farewell to Ken Bott at the end of term 1. Ken has been our property manager for the last 12 years and we very much appreciate how much he has done for the school over this time. Ken has quite rightly decided it is time to pursue his own interests intermingled with maybe part time work and we wish him all the very best.

Glamorgan is a rubbish free zone!

All plastic, paper and food rubbish must be taken home each day. Try a litterless lunch – put food into small airtight containers for your children, without any wrapping so they can eat the food and bring the container home. As a part of environmental learning we encourage children to be litter free so you may find they come home and ask you if they can take food out of the wrappers or have fresh fruit or vegies instead of processed food in a container. If you could support your child in this we would be grateful.

Big Day In – 8th March 2021

Last year we had to cancel our Big Day In. Fingers crossed it will go ahead in 2021!

On the 8th of March the school will be getting together and running a day of team games and activities. Teams will be of mixed ages and the focus will be on getting together, supporting each other and having fun. There will be a mix of indoor and outdoor activities. At lunchtime you are invited to come along and have lunch with your child. You may want to bring a picnic!

Drop off zone

The drop off zone is open in the mornings and after 3:15pm in the afternoons. This is a no parking zone between 8:15am -9:15am and 2:30pm -3:15pm. This is a drop off and pick up only between the times above. Please do not park and get out of your car as this causes congestion and means others cannot access the drop off zone from Glamorgan Drive. Parking on the yellow lines and letting children cross the drop off zone is very dangerous. It is important that we have access for emergency vehicles at all times. 

In the afternoons the gates are closed and open again at 3:15pm.  You are encouraged to park and walk into school to collect your child in the afternoons which has proven to be safer than having cars queuing out of the drop off zone and down Glamorgan Drive. As there are no cars in the drop off zone at 3pm you can encourage independence in your children by meeting them in the drop off zone rather than outside the classroom, or at the bottom of the field if you are using the back entrance ways to school. This would be a good routine to teach your children just incase we do go into lockdown again and parents are then not able to enter the school grounds.

Your child will bring home a drop off zone brochure on Friday afternoon. Please share this information with any family members or friends who pick up or drop off your child at school.

School hours

For safety reasons, children are not to enter the school grounds before 8.15am and need to leave before 3.15pm with the exception of sports training. Please note that teachers will not be required to be in their classrooms until 8:30am. Before this time they are preparing for the day ahead. 

Board of Trustees Meeting

The next Board meeting will be held at 7:00pm in the Administration building on Wednesday 17th February. Anyone is welcome to come along.

Coaches needed for Miniball (junior basketball)

We are  in need of coaches for miniball  in Year 3 and 4.  We have parents wanting to sign their child up but until we have a coach this is not possible.  If you are are interested in coaching please see Robyn Bennett in Room 23 or email  robynbennett@glamorgan.school.nz.   Games are in Browns Bay on Tuesdays after school.  Coaching times are arranged when the school hall is available – usually before or after school.  We appreciate the time and dedication given from coaches in the past.  Perhaps you may like to do it on a roster with another parent if your children are wanting to join?  We do not expect you to be an expert!

School Donations 2021

We greatly appreciate all donations made to the school. The school donation for the 2020 school year is as follows:

1 Child $190 $47.50
2 or more children $350 $87.50

Payment can be made any time now at the office by EFTPOS, Visa, internet banking or automatic payments can be arranged with your bank. Our bank account details are ASB 12-3080-0059486-00. Please ensure you complete the reference section with your child’s name and specify “school donation”. You are able to claim a tax refund on school donations paid by requesting and completing an IR526 form from the Inland Revenue.

Police Vetting for sports team coaches and managers

Since the Vulnerable Children’s Act came out in 2015 we continually update our procedures and policies around keeping children and young people safe. It is recommended that all sports coaches and managers are police vetted as they have a position of authority over children and are often alone with them. If you are, or will be volunteering to be, a sports coach or manager and you have not already completed a police vet through Glamorgan School in the last 3 years, can you please pop into the office with two forms of identification, one of which must be photo ID (e.g. a drivers licence and passport would be fine). The school will cover the cost of the police vet and the office staff will complete the paperwork required. A police vet lasts for 3 years.

Reporting to parents 

Children and parents will receive two written reports during the year and there are opportunities to meet with the teacher as a class and individually as well as sharing your child’s learning at open mornings and afternoons – watch the newsletter for dates and details of these. We use a range of different assessments to make any judgments about children’s progress in relation to the levels the children should be working at within the New Zealand Curriculum. 

A summary of the reporting cycle is below:

Term 1    Meet The Teacher (10th February) and  Parent/teacher/child discussions (22nd, 29th and 31st March between 3:15 and 5:30pm. We use an online tool to book appointments – details will be in the school newsletter the week before bookings open with the code to access our school’s times)

Term 2   Written report against progress made in relation to the New Zealand Curriculum. Parent/ teacher/child discussions for those families who request one (Tuesday 6th July)

Term 3   Sharing the Learning: Y1-6   3-6pm (Thursday 23rd September)

Term 4   End of year written report against all curriculum areas.

Scootering and Cycling to School

If your child is in Year 4, 5 or 6 they are allowed to cycle or scooter to school independently and leave their cycle or scooter securely fastened  during the day. To do this they MUST have parental permission. Permission letters are available from Mrs Watson’s window. Please be aware that all safety procedures for the child and scooter or bike are parents’ responsibility and the school takes no responsibility for bikes or scooters left on the school site.

If your child is in Year 1, 2 or 3 they are not allowed to cycle or scooter to school independently and leave their bike or scooter at school. Of course they can cycle or scooter with a parent and the parent can take the scooter or bike home again.

Electronic Devices

No electronic devices are to be sent to school, including e-readers and smart watches. If a student brings a cell phone or smart watch to school, it MUST be left at the office during the school day. This is to ensure the item is kept safe and that children aren’t accessing the internet while at school without teacher supervision.

Team names

For those families new to the school, following on from consultation with our Maori community  we  introduced team names throughout the school that represent the journey from year 1 to year 6 and would give a sense of identity and belonging to each team for the children. Our team names are:

Tātai-o-Matariki (or Matariki for short) –  New beginnings (Team 1)

Whanake – Growing (Team 2)

Hapori – Community (Team 3)

Tiakitanga – Guardianship (Team 4)

Haepapa – Responsibility (Team 5)

Rangatiratanga – Leadership (Team 6)

FOTS News
Welcome back to all our returning families, and welcome to new joiners from Glamorgan’s Friends of the School (FOTS) committee! For those that are new, FOTS is a friendly group of parents/caregivers who plan events for the school community and raise money to help make the school a better place for our children, such as school discos and quiz night.
 
We ALWAYS welcome new members to the committee and new ideas, so please come and join us! FOTS is a great way to make friends and have some fun, all while supporting our school. If you are interested in joining us send me, Sarah-Jane, an email fots@glamorgan.school.nz or you can join us at the next meeting.
 
Our first meeting of the year will be on Monday, 15 February at 7pm in the staff room (above the office) – come and have a glass of wine and see what’s on for 2021 and how you can help!
