Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome back to school and an action-packed programme for Term Two. We hope that everyone has had an
enjoyable two week break with time for some rest and relaxation.
The students are making good progress towards developing a greater sense of independence and responsibility for
themselves and their learning. They will continue to focus on refining ‘self-management’ skills by:
• Organising themselves.
• Making sensible choices.
• Accepting learning challenges.
• Working to the best of their ability.
The integrated studies themes for this term are based on the concept ‘Working Together’ and the big idea ‘interaction’,
and relate to:
• Matariki (Social Sciences)
• The Night Sky (Science and Technology)
Literacy programmes may link directly to integrated studies topics and will have an ongoing focus on developing the
skills needed for:
• Oral Language: listening actively and conveying spoken ideas clearly.
• Reading: reading, responding and thinking critically about texts.
• Writing: planning, composing and improving ideas.
• Viewing: retrieving and interpreting relevant information from a variety of visual texts.
• Presenting: organising and presenting information coherently.
Mathematics units will be based on multiplication and division, plotting and interpreting data, and shape and time.
Independent tasks will ensure that skills are maintained in addition and subtraction. Algebra plays an integral part in all
aspects of mathematics.
Physical education lessons will centre on developing fundamental movement skills. Students will also participate in a
series of Kiwisport hockey sessions and the school cross country.
The arts programme for this term will focus on developing skills in visual art and music. Motivations will include the
Starry Night painting by Vincent Van Gogh and traditional Maori instruments/songs.
Homework will continue as per term one. Students really benefit from parental input into this area of independent
learning. Your continued support is very much appreciated. We have been really impressed with the commitment
shown by the students to completing their homework regularly and to a high standard.
