Term 1 ends at 3pm on Thursday 6th April   (Good Friday 7th April)

Kia ora koutou.  Hello everyone.

Welcome back to school and a special welcome to the families and children new to Glamorgan School this year. There is quite a bit of information in this newsletter to start the year so please read to the end!

Meet the teacher evenings 2023 – note change of dates due to school starting later

One of the first whole school events this year is Meet the Teacher Evenings on 15th and 16th February 2023 – you should go to your child’s classroom. We would really like to start the year by seeing as many of you as we can and it will be a great way of seeing the classroom space your child will be in.

We have changed the way we will run Meet the Teacher, taking into consideration feedback from families who could not attend every class their children are in as the times clashed. We now have two evenings with a separate time for each year level.

Why not come along and have a sausage sizzle while you wait from our lovely Friends of the School team of volunteers and cut out cooking that evening as well!

Year 1-3 Wednesday 15th February

5.30-6.00 – Matariki (Year 1)

6.00-6.30 – Whanake (Year 2)

6.30-7.00 – Hapori (Year 3)

Year 4-6 Thursday 16th February

5.30-6.00 – Tiakitanga (Year 4)

6.00-6.30 – Haepapa (Year 5)

6.30-7.00 – Rangatiratanga (Year 6)

Travewise news
The sun is back and it’s a great time to use some summer travel options to get to school! Why not try walking from home, cycling or scootering (if your child is year 4-6), or park and walk for a change and avoid the traffic. On Tuesday 14th February we have a Walk to School promotion morning with Max the Pukeko and spot prizes and gold stars for those who walk to school or have been dropped off and walked some distance to school. Look out for the teachers at the entrances to school with prizes from 8:15am onwards and see if you can spot Max!

Glamorgan School 50th Golden Jubilee Year

Glamorgan School  turns 50 in 2023 and we are planning some special events throughout the year. Our first event will be a school community picnic to be held on Friday 3rd March (save day 17th March) from 5-7pm. There will be face painting and fun activities such as frisbees, sack races, egg and spoon, corn hole, ring toss and more that children and families can rotate around. Friends of the School (FoTS) will sell ice blocks and you’ll be able to order pizza through FoTS as well that will be delivered on the evening. So mark this in your calendar, bring your picnic rug and have some fun kicking off the 50th Jubilee celebrations!

Sun Safety

Sunhats

Due to the harsh effects of our summer sun and in accordance with our behaviour plan, children MUST wear a hat when outdoors during Term 1 and Term 4. This is not optional. Please make sure your child has a hat at school at all times this term.  A named hat to keep at school would be a great option. To give full protection the hat should provide cover for the face, neck and ears.

Sun screen

There are many child friendly options available for sun screen such as roll on and spray applicators. Children are welcome to have their own sun screen in their bag and apply this before morning tea and lunch time. The school office also has a large pump bottle of sunscreen the children can use at any time if they don’t have their own. Please encourage and show your children how to apply sun screen.

 Clothing

We expect children to wear t-shirts and tops that give protection to the back of the neck and shoulders. Children are welcome to wear sunglasses also during break times.

Cybersafety Agreements

These are to be completed online using Google Forms. When you receive the link to the form please take the time to sit down with your child and discuss the points raised and complete the form together. The link will be emailed to you over the next week. The forms will now be done annually as we feel it is important for you to discuss digital and online safety with your child on a regular basis. The form must be completed for the children to have access to a device at school.

Drop off zone

For those families new to the school our drop off zone is open in the mornings before school for children to be dropped off only. Pull over to the school side, filling from the front end of the drop off zone and let your child out onto the pavement – do not let them get out and cross the drop off zone with incoming cars, this is not safe. Please do not park in this area before 9:15am. If you wish to walk with your child to the classroom then you will need to park down the road or at the back of the school and walk in with them from Carnmore Place or Danbury Drive.

In the afternoon school finishes at 3pm and we expect children to be collected from school at this time. Please arrange to meet your child or park and walk into the school to meet them. Due to severe traffic issues when the drop off zone was open it is now closed to 3:15pm, after which it is open for parking again. Please do not queue down Glamorgan Drive before 3:15 as the traffic wardens will issue tickets.

Absence from school

If your child is absent from school please let the school know each morning they are absent. The best way to do this is to complete the absence form on the front of the school website or through Skool Loop (details of how to join are below). This goes to your child’s teacher and Paula Campbell, our resource manager. Alternatively you can call the school and leave a message on the absence line. If the roll is taken at school and we have not received any notification of why your child is absent then you will be sent a reminder text. Please do not reply to this text as this is an outgoing text service only.

Glamorgan is a rubbish free zone!

All plastic, paper and food rubbish must be taken home each day. Try a litterless lunch – put food into small airtight containers for your children, without any wrapping so they can eat the food and bring the container home. As a part of environmental learning we encourage children to be litter free so you may find they come home and ask you if they can take food out of the wrappers or have fresh fruit or vegies instead of processed food in a container. If you could support your child in this we would be grateful.

Board meeting

The Board will next meet on Wednesday 15th February at 7pm in the administration building. If you wish to attend please contact the school office.
