As the cooler weather settles in, I find myself looking forward to those cozy afternoons curled up with a good book. There’s something truly magical about getting lost in a story, especially on a rainy day.
When we talk about reading, it's important to remember just how significant it is for our children's learning. Time and again, research confirms that strong reading skills are a cornerstone of academic achievement. Reading proficiency is a key indicator of academic success. Studies highlight the strong correlation between early reading skills and later academic achievement across all subjects. For example, data indicates that students who read regularly demonstrate improved comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills. Parents play a vital role in fostering a love of reading by modeling good habits. Sharing what you are reading with your child can be a powerful motivator. And don’t forget, your kids are never too old to be read to! I still have vivid memories of childhood camping trips and my Mum reading to us before bed. 45+ years later, it still brings a smile to my face.
Personally, I've recently enjoyed the Seven Sisters series and Atomic Habits. I encourage you to share your recent reads with your children and make reading a regular part of your family routine. As the winter season approaches, consider opting for some family reading time instead of screen time. It's a wonderful opportunity for connection, conversation, and supporting your children's learning.
On a much more energetic note, we are all looking forward to the disco tonight! We thank our amazing FOTS (Friends of the School) for their incredible dedication and hard work in organising this event. We are so excited about the "See You at Waiake" theme, and I know all that dancing in the hall will keep us warm and happy!
For those families participating in the Shore-to-Shore run this Sunday, I'll see you at the finish!
Ngā mihi nui,
